Here are my top favorite movie list and recommendations divided into universal categories.
But I can hear the voice of a vermin whispering to me that the whole idea of a credible list of best movies is pure stupidity. That is because it inevitably ends up being highly subjective endeavor. Or have you maybe watch every movie ever made? No. Instead you choose and value movies within your worldview, age, nationality etc. And how can you rate movies anyway? Movies are entertainment and art. That’s why they are a matter of taste not measurable performances. How about different kind of genres? Are you really trying to compare which is better, Totoro or Silence of the Lambs?
We should also remember the
conditions. Some movies you see big screen in cinema with your new girlfriend
and caramel flavored popcorn. Another movies you download and watch with your dirty
computer screen while you are actually drunk and dazed. I think you get the
point. If you want even pretend objectivity you should empty your movie room
from every furniture and items, undress yourself and mediate four hours of Zen
Buddhism kōans before any opening credits.
There are more obstacles. Imagine
you saw The Mummy Returns fifteen years ago. Now you don’t remember anything
from it except that you loved it. So maybe you should put it on your list. On
the other hand, your Mummy-experience was long time ago when you were still a
teenager. Should you maybe check the tomb afresh? With same logic you should
watch every movie you have ever seen again and again because you change all time. Well,
we know what happens. The Mummy Returns and it sucks. You now have two opinions
on one movie. Can you just ignore your happy time with the walking cabbage roll?
I mention the last and maybe the hardest difficulty. It’s the Godfather-dilemma. You know those movies which makes the critics jump off from the bridge after they have cried to us that whoever doesn’t love this movie has no soul? So we would like to like this Ingrid Bergman’s black and white study of an existentialism relationship between man and a void. Actually we found it boring. But 10000 critics can’t be wrong. It is obvious that the problem is not the movie but your uncivilized mind which has been made numb by Hollywood crap. You don’t want to make moron out of yourself. So when someone asks you about that Tarkovsky film, you just repeat those adjectives like “mesmerizing” or “stellar” or whatever you have heard the critics use. Is your list about yourself or do you just copy those five stars masterpieces on there? More public list the greater is the danger to fell in the hands of the Godfather.
All this said it should be clear to
everyone that making these kind of lists should be left to real professionals.
